Substation Technician - Job Description (Sample)

Job Summary:

Electric Substation Technician performs skilled and semiskilled electrical and mechanical work in the repair, maintenance, monitoring, modification, and testing of gas-driven internal combustion engines that power electric generators. 

Responsibilities:

  • Installing and repairing electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, switches, transformers, and other equipment used in power distribution systems
  • Inspecting electrical equipment, facilities, and materials to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Coordinating with other workers to schedule repairs and maintenance
  • Testing electrical components using meters and other equipment to ensure they are working properly
  • Troubleshooting problems with electrical equipment or power lines that may be causing fires or other safety hazards
  • Recording information about maintenance activities, including time, location, and materials used
  • Maintaining records of work orders and other tasks performed on equipment such as circuit breakers and transformers
  • Installing and repairing electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, switches, transformers, and other equipment used in power distribution systems
  • Operating cranes, forklifts, or other equipment used to move large objects or materials around the workplace.
  • Collection and monitoring of emissions control data and troubleshooting engines, generators, and switchgear. May assist electric metering or electric distribution staff or other areas within the electric unit with construction, maintenance, and/or repair work on an as-needed basis.  

Requirements: 

  • A minimum of six months of full-time work experience involving outdoor exposure and physical exertion.
  • Experience in and around energized electrical equipment with a public or private utility system or similar facilities such as a mine or industrial or chemical plant is highly desirable. Participation in or completion of a Journeyman Electrician apprenticeship is preferred   
  • Maintains accurate repair and maintenance records of work performed. Learns job-related material through on-the-job training and in classroom settings.
  • Must have basic knowledge of electricity concepts and blueprints, combustion engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems, use and care of shop tools, test instruments, and equipment, safety equipment and procedures used when working on and around generators; and the tools, equipment, materials, and supplies needed for installing, maintaining, and repairing generators.
  • Also performs a variety of tasks to follow established procedures for maintaining and repairing generators, follow verbal and written directions and instructions; follow safety rules and be aware of the safety of others in the area.
